This was a great message from the 2006 Desiring God conference “The Supremacy of Christ in a Post-Modern World.” Keller specifically focuses on how to evangelize and gives “more of a lecture than a sermon” in his own words.  Relevant from anyone who wishes to preach the gospel in our modern culture.

Unlike the other sessions, this breakout told a story.  This story was about a man passing on the baton to the next generation.  You could almost say this was the goal of the Next Conference being played out in the Church.  One generation gives wisdom and trains the younger generation to hold fast the gospel.  When the time comes, the younger generation steps up and continues the work of the Church, to preach the gospel in all the nations and to endure until the Lord’s return. If you haven’t heard the news yet, a 19 year old from Florida committed suicide on a live webcam last Wednesday.  Many watched it as it happened; some were even warned he might take pills to kill himself.  Most just thought it was a hoax, and even once moderators were warned they brushed it off because of his former “trolling” status on the forum.  Finally a forum member took the initiative to look up the teen’s real name and address, which he tried to give to the police. I understand that I have been very quiet on this blog and for that I must apologize.  With that being stated, I am going to start a series on Evangelism that could last a very long time.  I am unqualified to write on such a topic, but I pray that God would give me grace to do so and that He would be glorified through this leaky vessel’s work.  I am a sinner in desperate need for the grace of God.

What is the etymological root of “evangelism”?  “Evangelize” comes from the Greek work “euangelion” which means “object of good news.”  To evangelize is to share one’s object of good news.  I purpose this short essay and its ensuing series to the labor of showing some weaknesses in the modern construction of evangelism and to cultivate a more accurate, biblical and authentic view of evagelism, encouraging Christians to love their Savior more.
