Bible is too liberal, says conservative translator

Anne Miller of AOL News wrote a story on Wednesday about a conservative that says the Bible is too liberal.  At least the newer translations are.

Attorney and teacher Andy Schlafly, in response to what he has called “liberal,” “offensive” and “incorrect” translations, formed the Conservative Bible Project, a Wiki software-based site devoted to “clean(ing) up” the Bible.

While Schlafly has his critics, he has denounced their criticisms, calling them “liberals who are unhappy that their game is up.”

Am I alone in thinking how stupid this is?

Interesting blog cross reference.

When you say the endeavor is stupid: do you mean that it’s a waste of time (namely, that it’s impossible to liberal-proof anything, let alone the Bible)?

OR are you now, or have you ever been, a liberal?

I say that the endeavor is stupid because it seeks to impose conservative values on the Scriptures. It’s not theologically conservative, for that would not be imposition but exposition from the scriptures. It’s politically conservative and the man who does this is, I think, guilty of doing the same thing that Jefferson did when he made his Jeffersonn Bible: cutting out scriptures to fit your agenda. In addition, it accuses the ESV of liberal bias because it uses the word comrade more than volunteer. Finally, it translates “pharasee” as liberal.

I also reject the notion that the Bible has a liberal bias, especially when conservatives think that everything has a liberal bias, or that a paper being liberal in its editoral affects its news coverage. This is usually based on no evidence or a poor understanding of the news.

Finally, I’m not a liberal but I’m not exactly a conservative either. I believe in the gospel as it has always been, yet I am for whatever government or system works just as long as it is not immoral. For example, I would be perfectly okay with a more regulated economy if it worked and my tax dollars didn’t go to such things as abortions or imperialistic wars. I hold my politics loosely, but clutch to truth with all my might.
